InTheirShoes helps students and early-career people explore careers. This page explains what we collect, why, who else sees it, and how you can see, export or delete it. We have tried to write it in plain language. Questions: the person who invited you to InTheirShoes.
What we collect
- Account details: your name and email, and either a password (stored only as a one-way hash, never readable) or your Google account identifier if you sign in with Google.
- Your answers: the option you choose on each career-simulation question, the trait scores computed from them, and the reports built from those scores.
- What you write: in Hard mode, the free-text answers you type for the written scenarios.
- Profile questionnaires: your answers to the interest and personality questionnaires and the scores computed from them.
- Careers you ask us to build:the career name you type into the “build this career” feature.
- A sign-in cookie that keeps you logged in, and a small setting in your browser that remembers light or dark mode. We do not use advertising or analytics trackers.
Why we use it
To run the service: to save your progress, compute your results and matches, produce your reports, let you sign in and reset a forgotten password, and keep the site working and safe. We do not sell your data, use it for advertising, or build profiles of you for anyone else.
Who else handles it
We use a few providers to run the site. Each receives only what it needs:
- Vercel (hosting) and Neon (database), which store the data above.
- Google, if you sign in with Google, and, in Hard mode only, for scoring your written scenario answers and writing your narrative simulation report with an AI model (Google Gemini, or Anthropic’s Claude if that is configured instead). These calls receive your answers to that simulation, not your name or email. Career-generation requests you type in are sent the same way. Please don’t put names, phone numbers or other personal details in your written answers. Easy mode makes no AI calls at all.
- Resend, which sends password-reset emails.
Your questionnaire answers and results are never sent to an AI model.
Research use is optional
When you take a profile questionnaire there is a box, unticked by default, asking if we may use your answers without your name or email to check that the questionnaires give consistent results and to improve this site. It never changes your own results. You can withdraw it at any time from your account page.
Young people
The Easy mode is designed for students in about classes 9 and 10. Access to InTheirShoes is by invitation from the site owner. If you are under 18, please make sure a parent or guardian knows you are using it and agrees. We do not show advertising, do not track behaviour for advertising, and do not share young people’s data with anyone except the service providers above. A parent or guardian can ask us to delete a child’s account and data at any time.
Your choices
- See and export everything we hold about you from your account page.
- Delete your account and all your answers, scores, reports and questionnaires from the same page. This cannot be undone. Careers you asked us to build stay available to others; they contain no personal data and we remove the link to you.
- Correct or ask a question by contacting us: the person who invited you to InTheirShoes.
How long we keep it
Until you delete your account. If your access is withdrawn, your data stays until you ask us to remove it or delete it yourself.
Security
Passwords are hashed, connections are encrypted, and every page checks that you are signed in and only shows you your own data. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a password you do not use anywhere else.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will update the date above and say so on the site.
